This fun picture book totally surprised me!
I had expected Home by Carson Ellis to be about different types of homes people from around the world from highrises and ranches to igloos and wigwams. And Home does start out that way.
Then, just when you think you know what it’s about, it surprises you!
With a shoe. Must be the shoe the old lady with “so many children she didn’t know what to do” lived in.
From then on, Home intersperses actual homes with fantastical ones. Your child won’t be able to wait to see what home will be on each next page.
But my favorite is when you reach the artist’s home. Notice her worktable. See if your child can match the items there with each of the homes on the previous pages.
Your kids will want to go back and look through the pictures again and again after you read it together.
If I’ve piqued your interest, you’ll enjoy this book trailer where Carson Ellis talks about her book, Home:
(I just figured out that Carson Ellis illustrated some of my other favorite books like The Mysterious Benedict Society!)
Is there a book that has surprised you? I’d love to hear about it!
Yes! We love this one! Totally familiar and comforting and heartwarming, but, like you said, heartwarming too!
Yes, heartwarming is a good description! 🙂 Thanks for stopping by, Amy!
Gorgeous illustrations! I admire kid lit artists so much — their artwork accounts for such an important part of the storytelling process. Thanks for sharing. Hopping over from the Kid Lit Blog Hop!
Yes! She is so talented! I’m sure pre-readers would even enjoy looking at the pictures without knowing the story. Thanks for stopping by! 🙂
Sounds like a very entertaining book for the very young :0)
I really want to read Home. I love the idea of fantasy homes being included alongside real ones 🙂

This looks like it might be a good fit with our homeschool Children Around the World study this year. Thanks for sharing your thoughts on this book at Booknificent Thursday this week! Sharing this on my Desperate Homeschoolers page on facebook.

My youngest loves picture books. I can’t wait to get my hands on a copy to share with him. I’m looking forward to your next book at Literacy Musing Mondays.
Thanks, Tami! I hope he enjoys it 🙂
