It’s always exciting to learn that a friend is expecting. And if that friend is a first-time mom, I’m always itching to share some of our favorite books with her.
There is something special about the first books you enjoy with your baby. Your child may not remember these books, but you will treasure them for a lifetime. Perhaps you’ll even save them to pass on to your child or read to your grandchildren.
And books make such great baby gifts! They’ll be enjoyed much longer than any toys and last longer than clothes. And what you are really giving when you give a book is memory building time between mom and baby.
Here are six of my favorite baby shower gift books.
Guess How Much I Love You by Sam McBratney is a precious book that explores the fact that no matter how much a child loves his parents, they always love him more. If you’ve heard the phrase, “I love you to the moon and back,” it comes from this sweet book.
Ten Little Fingers and Ten Little Toes by Mem Fox is a cute little rhyming book that shows different babies all over the world who each have “ten little fingers and ten little toes” ending with the narrator’s own baby. I love the multicultural aspect of this book.
All of Baby Nose to Toes by Victoria Adler is fun to read. My little ones have loved the fun rhythms of the book naming baby’s body parts (nose, ears, eyes, tummy, legs, toes) and who loves them.
Hush Little Ones by John Butler is a wonderful, snuggly bedtime book for baby. The illustrations of the different animals and their babies going to sleep are beautiful, and the poetic text is lovely.
Goodnight Moon by Margaret Wise Brown is a classic. Your parents may have read it to you! Children love the vivid colors and detailed illustrations and the simple text.
The Runaway Bunny is another Margaret Wise Brown classic. Little Bunny wonders what would happen if he ran away to become various things, but Mother Bunny’s love is strong enough to follow and find him anywhere.
What are your favorite baby shower gift books that you have given or received?
I also love White on Black and Who are They? by Tana Hoban. They are perfect for very little babies.
Yes, those high contrast books are great for newborns! That would make a great post by itself. Thanks for stopping by! 🙂
Pat The Bunny is also a great book. Sandra Boynton books are great books, too.
I LOVE Boynton! I have a whole post of my favorite books of hers, and I’ve definitely given them as baby gifts. 🙂 https://www.housefullofbookworms.com/best-boynton-books-top-10
This is a great list! And now I know what I’m taking to my sister’s baby shower. pinning
Thanks for pinning and for stopping by! 🙂
Always on our list! Thanks for sharing on the Kid Lit Blog Hop!
I enjoy giving books for shower gifts too, but probably don’t stick with the same ones! “Good Night, Moon” and “Runaway Bunny” are definitely favorites. I also like McBratney’s other book, “You’re All My Favorites.” Visiting from Literacy Musing Mondays.
McBratney is so great! I just looked at your Best Bible Books post, and it looks like a great resource! Thanks for stopping by!
This is a great selection. All of the above books have been my kids’ favorites at one time or another. And we got Guess How Much I Love You as a shower gift 🙂
Thanks Eva! Glad you stopped by! That shark buoyancy experiment looks neat! I think my son would love it. Bookmarking your site to browse more later. 🙂
Thanks for linking up with Literacy Musing Mondays. 🙂
Thanks so much for this sharing! Great suggestion for me to choose a baby shower gift.
Happy to help! Books always make the best baby shower gifts! 🙂
Just because it’s a baby shower doesn’t mean that she should be the only guest of honor in attendance! A couple’s shower can be a wonderful way for the expectant parents to share
That’s a great point! And we hope that both mom and dad will be reading to baby! 🙂
Wow, Carolyn, that is a super helpful information, especially for me. I have always loved reading books to my baby but I have also always wondered which book to get for me and my little girl that not only I am going to memorize it but it is going to build memory in my kid as well.
