The Ling and Ting books written and illustrated by Grace Lin are one of my new favorite series for early readers. These Level 3 chapter books are a great bridge to build your child’s confidence in reading longer stories.
Ling and Ting are Chinese-American identical twins. They may look alike, but they are not exactly the same. These girls are fun, sweet, and silly. The stories are humorous, and they include elements of Chinese-American culture.
One of my favorite things about each book is the way the girls make up a story in the last chapter that mixes elements from all the previous chapters. Pay attention and you’ll see a lot of hidden details in the illustrations.
There are three Ling and Ting books so far: Ling and Ting: Not Exactly the Same; Ling and Ting Share a Birthday; and Ling and Ting: Twice as Silly. The fourth book, Ling and Ting: Together in all Weather, comes out in November 2015.
I think any beginner reader would enjoy these early chapter books, but if your child is a twin or Chinese-American, the Ling and Ting books are a must read!
What are your favorite books for early readers?
Thanks so much for sharing. I’d seen these at the library and wondered about them. Those fit perfectly with my daughter’s reading level. Plus, we lived in China until she turned one. If you like Chinese books, you should try books by Ed Young. He is one of my favorite authors who writes books about China for kids.
Oh, these are perfect for you then! I’ve also heard good things about her middle grade novel, Where the Mountain Meets the Moon, but haven’t had a chance to try it yet. I’ll check out Ed Young. Any favorite books of his? Thanks for stopping by!
Oh, I’ll have to check these out! My 7 yr. old LOVES to read and is devouring books at a fierce rate.
Glad to hear you have a voracious reader! I hope they enjoy the Ling and Ting books! Thanks for stopping by 🙂
We stumbled across the first Ling and Ting book in a library last time we were in the US and my 2nd daughter fell in love with it, but I didn’t realize there were more! What a fun surprise for her! I found you at the Literacy Musings Mondays link up, and I’m so glad I did. I also host an all-things-books link-up every Thursday at Mommynificent.com. I’d love to have you join us anytime!
Tina
Thanks, Tina! I’ll put your link-up on my calendar 🙂
